Greetings. This is my opening blog, and it is the first time I have done this, so please bear with me. I am a theology professor at a Catholic university in the Midwest United States. Like most Catholic colleges and universities, we are in the midst of an epic struggle over our Catholic identity. In my theology classes, I publicly teach what the Church teaches, explaining to my students (the majority of whom are not Catholic) that I do this out of obligation and out of conviction. I have been warned not to "force" my students to be Catholic, and have even been accused of grading my students according to whether or not they "agree with me." In short, I am suspected of proselytizing.I draw a distinction, however, between the lay apostolate and proselytization. As Catholics, we are called to constant witness to the Truth as revealed through the Church. Am I supposed to cease my apostolic activity when I enter the classroom? I think not. Moreover, this is not the same thing as actively seeking to convert people to the faith (proselytization). For an analogy of what I attempt to do in the classroom, I cite a passage from Benedict XVI's Deus Caritas Est: "Charity, furthermore, cannot be used as a means of engaging in what is nowadays considered proselytism. Love is free; it is not practised as a way of achieving other ends" (II.31). I teach the faith of the Church for its own sake, for liberal education is an end in itself, just as charity is in the order of service to one's neighbor. Teaching the Catholic faith does not have proselytization as its end. Any thoughts?

You should probably go the Stanley Hauerwas route.

As one article puts it

His opening-day lecture to his divinity school classes usually involves some form of the claim, "I don't want you to think for yourselves. I want you to think like me."

DJW-- forget it. Students MUST think for themselves and I have the key to doing that. I will help this theology professo if I can find him. Right now-- that's my task... Hello Theology Prof... are you there?

Alright, I'm back.

I jsut read the post again where you are accused of proseletizing and that that's not to be done. Funny thing about so called proselitying however. In the world I'm in, which embrces CAtholic humanism, we speak of "psyops"-- or psychological operations.

convert to another faith or religion....

To proselytize-- to convert-- as if the conversion process is something you do TO someone and NOT as if the conversion takes place becauset the student discovers a higher truth through you...

So the order to "not proselytize" ASSUMES that a "conversion" would have been the result of something you DID TO a student-- without reference to the student DISCOVERING, through his own sovereign cognition, a higher truth, with your assistance. The edict to NOT PROSELYTIZE assumes something about human nature which is NOT TRUE in the area with which we deal-- which is upgrading the human mind.

Therefore, the university is running a psyop against you BY DEFINITION.

So the way out of this conundrum, as a Catholic Humanist is to discuss "truth". And the best way to do that is through science and the history of science-- and the versions of science emanating from the Renaissance vs. the Enlightenment... naming historical names-- and results... and pointing to the current status of the "war" between the two factions... with where the PROOF is of the "higher truth" represented by "Christian humanism" as evidenced in "energy flux density"-- as it relates to "go forth and multiply" in Genesis.

Well, I could go on-- but my "thing" right now is to upgrade Catholic Humanism, worldwide-- and to demonstrate to the Catholic Church at it's highest levels, that the leading of Catholic love for humanity-- agagpe-- will be expressed in a Catholic Humanist order-- that has a current working body of knowledge that will save mankind from destruction and decay and the worst dark age in human history before the onset of the next ice age, due soon.
